  “By the end of tomorrow’s rehearsal, we will have all of our roles locked into place,” she said. “Ben, in your case, that does mean that your role as Romeo is up for grabs.”

  “The same goes for the role of Juliet,” said Luciana. “Mika. Skipping rehearsal is never acceptable.”

  “The two of you will be alternating as Juliette for today,” she said. “Along with our newest cast member.”

  “I want to see all of you living your roles,” said Luciana. “It isn’t going to be easy. I hoped that you would understand this from the beginning, but if I have to teach you as we go, so be it.”

  “But…” He shook his head. “She’s my sister. And I’m going to be playing Romeo?”

  “I guess you’ll have to work a bit harder to live the role, then,” she said.

  A wave of laughter went through the cast. Ben looked over at Alina. She looked unphased and set her hand on top of his reassuringly.

  “It’s just acting, Ben,” she said.

  “It’s not fair for Luciana to bring another actor in to try for the part of Juliette!”

  Jessie stood next to Ben. They watched as most of the rest of the cast, Alina included, worked to set up props on the stage.

  “She was supposed to be on a trip over the summer,” said Ben. “I can’t believe she’s here, and involved in this play. It just… doesn’t seem fair.”

  He sighed. Jessie was glaring at him, as though she blamed him for Alina’s arrival.

  “Please, Jessie,” he said. “Let’s just… focus on rehearsal right now. We can talk more about that, later, alright?”

  She glared at him but slowly nodded. Ben tried to keep his frustration over her from evolving into ang

  “Alright,” said Luciana. “I know this isn’t an ideal situation to be working from, but I would like it if all of you would do your best to remain professional and focus on what needs to be done.”

  She motioned for Ben and Jessie to join her on stage.

  “Ben, I’m going to have you playing the role of Romeo for now,” she said. “I don’t think it would serve us well to be alternating more than one of the two main roles at once.”

  Strangely, she looked over at Alina, as though questing out with her gaze for her opinion. Alina nodded slightly.

  “Let’s take it from the balcony kiss scene,” said Luciana. “Mika, I’d like you to start out as Juliette for the first run through.”

  Jessie scowled but hurried off into the wing. Alina smiled softly at Ben, her green eyes betraying little of her underlying emotions. Mika moved into place across from him, clearing her face and preparing to act.

  “Whenever you’re ready,” said Luciana.

  “Sometimes you have to take what you want,” she said.

  “Let’s not talk about that now,” she said. “I only just got back today. Let’s head home, have dinner, catch up with mom on everything that’s happened, and relax.”

  “Ben.” Luciana walked over to them, interrupting without any apologies. “I need to speak with you for a couple of minutes.”

  Alina smiled gently at him.

  “I’ll see you at home,” she said.

  Alina, along with the rest of the cast, filed out through the main doors in the back of the auditorium. Luciana was waiti
ng for him onstage, and Ben felt a little exposed walking over to her.

  “What’s up?” he asked.

  Luciana frowned and crossed her arms.

  “You did good work today,” she said. “However, I need more from you.”

  Ben nodded, fighting back his frustration. He’d put his all into the day’s rehearsal. He wasn’t sure what more she could possibly expect of him.

  “Does this mean that you’ve decided to keep me in the lead role?” he finally asked. Luciana nodded.

  “Yes,” she said. “You make a good Romeo. However, I need your help in deciding who would make a good Juliette.”

  He shrugged.

  “You’re the director,” he said. “You make casting choices like this all the time.”

  Luciana’s gaze took on a reproachful quality. She walked closer to him. It was almost as though she was a drill sergeant, getting ready to scream at an impetuous recruit for a wiseass remark.

  “My casting decision is informed by all of the information I have at hand,” said Luciana. “And I need to know exactly which one of those girls is the one that you’re going to be able to bring out a realistic performance in.”

  Ben shook his head.

  “I’m sorry, Luciana, this is my first time in a production like this,” he said. “I’m not sure I know what you’re asking.”
